25 April 2008 - There have been dramatic developments in Malaysia since the ruling National Front (BN) government had its majority in parliament reduced sharply in the March 8 general elections. Opposition parties, which won five out of 13 state governments, formed a new People’s Alliance (PR) on April 1. At this stage, the PR comprises the Justice Party (PKR), the Islamic Party (PAS) and the Democratic Action Party (DAP).
29 March 2008 - On March 18, Peter Boyle interviewed S. Arutchelvan, the secretary general of the Malaysian Socialist Party (PSM), about the PSM’s electoral successes in the March 12 general elections. This interview was originally published by socialist e-journal Links.
The PSM has received growing media attention since it won its first federal and state parliamentary seats in the March 8 general elections, under the banner of the Justice Party (PKR). Due to legal restrictions, the PSM was barred from contesting the elections under its own logo.
Below is a March 9 statement by the Malaysian Socialist Party (PSM).
After four decades, two members of the PSM finally won seats in the general elections held on March 8.
PSM national chairperson Dr Nasir Hashim won the Kota Damansara state seat in Selangor, beating United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) candidate Zein Isma Ismail by 1075 majority. Hashim secured 11,846 votes compared to Zein 10,771.
